NAS write performance sees no improvements but if it's backup features you're looking for then Synology's DSM software won't disappoint. ![]() The additional 10GbE upgrade options increase its versatility but a CPU upgrade would have been welcome as the Atom C2538 is nearly five years old. With a price tag for a diskless unit that's shade under 800, the RS818+ looks good value and is only slightly more costly that the RS815+ it's replacing. You can find the documents and files regarding the operating system, packages, desktop utilities and so on for your Synology product to enjoy the latest and versatile features. We also used the Snapshot Replication app to replicate NAS folders and IP SAN LUNs to another Synology appliance for disaster recovery. The Cloud Station Server app teams up with the Backup Windows workstation client to provide one-way synchronization while the Cloud Station Drive agent extends this to two-way synchronizations.Īgentless backup is possible too as the Active Backup for Servers app secures selected data on Windows and Linux systems just using network shares. Perfect for essential off-site backups, we had no problems running Hyper Backup jobs that secured selected folders on the appliance to cloud storage.Ĭloud features are exemplary as the Cloud Sync app can now synchronize appliance data with 22 providers including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Drive, Dropbox, Google and OneDrive. The Hyper Backup app manages all your local, remote, Rysnc and cloud backups from one console and also integrates with Synology's C2 Backup cloud service. During volume creation, make sure you select the BTRFS option as this enables NAS share and IP SAN snapshots, which can be run manually and scheduled at regular intervals using the Snapshot Replication app. I hope this helps others get their work done this summer if the same thing happens to you.The RS818+ targets services such as backup and its 64-bit CPU means it can run all of Synology's data protection apps. I closed my blinds, got my Macbook Pro up off the desk and on a monitor stand and then set a desk fan on it all day. The solution was nit a very technical one. And this is on a 2012 MacBook Pro with maxed out everything possible and internal solid state drives (SSD). It just doesn’t leave enough power for other things. Sort of like on Star Trek when Scotty puts all the power to the front deflector shields. It was simply getting so hot that over 70% of the CPU was being used to run the cooling fans. My MacBook Pro was sitting flat on my desk, in front of a closed window (with Air Conditioning Running) but with the sun hitting it. It soon became clear that it was indeed an obvious answer. So after rebooting, killing all programs and having nothing work (and being unable to get anything accomplished) I pulled out my iPad and research the issue. ![]() Last week the red blocks covered 75% of this display. The CPU usage is low and the graphic shows minimal red blocks which represent the amount of CPU being used by the system itself. The image below shows what mine looks like right now. The mystery we are solving here is one where the % System is extremely high. When you open the program you will immediately notice the CPU usage display on the bottom panel. You can search for it with spotlight or navigate to Applications…Utilities…Activity Monitor. Find the program on your Macbook Pro named “Activity Monitor”. The answer was actually very simple and I feel silly now for not having figured it out sooner.įirst of all, for those who have a Macbook Pro running slow and don’t know why here is how to see if its your system or a program to blame. This is what I was going through for a couple of days this past week working at our offices just outside of Boston during the mini heat wave we experienced with several days in the 80s and 90s. Is your Macbook Pro experiencing high system CPU usage above 60-70%? Maybe you’re only noticing that all your applications are lagging like they are running in quicksand? There are surely a number if potential reasons and I don’t propose the following is for everybody but it seems obvious enough that its certainly worth your consideration. ![]()
